CALS EDC lunch and learn: Lessons learned from Hurricane Maria – Mar. 11
Members of the CALS community are invited to join the next session of the CALS Equity and Diversity Committee’s 2018-2019 Lunch and Learn Series:
“When extreme weather events collide with socio-economic reality: Lessons learned from Hurricane María”
Monday, March 11, 2019
12:00 p.m. – 1 p.m.
Steenbock Library Biocommons, Room 110A
On Sept. 20, 2017, Hurricane Maria made landfall in Puerto Rico. This session aims to highlight the events before, during and after the storm in its passing through the island and how it affected the livelihood of Puerto Ricans. We will provide a brief historical context of Puerto Rico and the events that contributed to the socio-economic situation exacerbated by the hurricane. We will discuss the effects of the hurricane’s passing on island, including its agriculture, and UW-Madison students’ experiences while living in Puerto Rico and Madison. The efforts by UW-Madison graduate students that formed “Madison for Puerto Rico” will be highlighted. Furthermore, the lessons learned from the storm’s passing will be discussed and examples from grassroots efforts for relief and rebuilding will be provided.
Lunch will be sponsored by the Office of Academic Affairs in CALS, so please register at this link. (NOTE: If you receive an error message and cannot access the survey, make sure you are registering with your UW-Madison G Suite account. Click here to learn how to access that account.)
Following a Climate, People, and Environment Program seminar last fall about Hurricane Maria’s impact on Puerto Rico, a group of students was inspired to put on this presentation. They worked with the CALS EDC to coordinate it.
All are welcome.
