All UW-Madison Science Researchers and Outreachers are invited to participate April–6 in the 12th Annual UW-Madison Science Expeditions April 4–6. Science Expeditions is an annual campus-wide science open house that welcomes the community to their public, land-grant research university. This campus-wide open house features three types of programs:
- Destinations for Exploration that include venues across campus)
- Hands-on Exploration Stations that share insights into your research
- Science Spectaculars—presentations that engage a larger audience, usually (but not always) in an auditorium
Destinations for Exploration. These satellite venues are at the heart of our open house. Some Destinations for Exploration, such as the Geology Museum, are normally opened on Saturdays. Others, such as the Zoology Museum or the Botany Greenhouse or DC Smith Greenhouse, open on this weekend especially for Science Expeditions. Open hours are set by the venue; most open around 9 am and some stay open until later in the afternoon. On Saturday the Destinations for Exploration are served by two trolleys that circulate visitors around central campus. If you’d like to help make your building or lab or facility a Destination for Exploration, contact Tom Zinnen at 608 265 2420 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Exploration Stations are interactive exhibits (mostly table-top) that provide hands-on activities for kids and families that invite visitors to experience science as exploring the unknown, develop their science knowledge, and learn about the fascinating research happening every day at the University of Wisconsin. They are hosted by many members of the campus scientific community, including students, faculty, staff and retirees. The main venue for Exploration Stations on Saturday April 5 will be the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery. On Sunday April 6 the main venue will be the atrium of the Health Sciences Learning Center.
Science Spectaculars include events such as the Wonders of Physics shows, SPICE Chemistry shows and Fusion Science Theatre. To pitch an idea for a Science Spectacular built around your work, please contact Tom Zinnen at 608.265. 2420 or Ana Garic at 608.262.9346
