Join CALS for WI State Fair school supply drive to benefit Milwaukee-area youth

On Wednesday, Aug. 10 the UW-Madison College of Agricultural and Life Sciences will celebrate UW-Madison Day at the Wisconsin State Fair. Stop by the CALS Corner on Central Mall that day and say hello.

And your visit to the State Fair can also help others. To benefit Milwaukee-area children who lack the equipment for a successful school year, UW-Madison is sponsoring a school supplies drive. Simply bring a new, unopened school supply to a State Fair admissions gate, and you’ll receive a voucher for $5 off a Midway “Ride All Day” wristband (while supplies last). One discount per item donated.

Can’t make it to the state fair? Drop your school supplies off in the red, specially-marked barrel in Rm. 240, Agriculture Hall, 1450 Linden Ave. If you’re not sure what to donate, here’s a list of suggested items.

CALS kicks things off  at the fair with a cheesemaking demonstration on the Central Mall main stage at 10:00 a.m. featuring Babcock Dairy Plant’s master cheesemaker Gary Grossen. And right after the cheesemaking demonstration, there’ll be cheese and ice cream samples from the Babcock Dairy.

A “farmers market” tent assembled and staffed by top flight agricultural scientists from our statewide system of Agricultural Research Stations (ARS) will be open from 9:00 to 4:00 to help visitors connect the food they eat with its roots in research and farming. ARS researchers will be on hand to answer questions about a long list of Wisconsin-grown goods: corn, soybeans, sweet corn, cranberries, potatoes, apples, cherries, grapes, onions, carrots, beets, oats, peas and more.

CALS scientists also will lead numerous family-friendly “hands-on” science activities in Exploration Stations covering such topics as turf and soil management, wildlife, insects and more.
