Campus offers resources for dealing with phishing scams

Phishing scams are a growing problem on campus. Phishing attempts are often difficult to detect, since they may appear to be from a valid source (especially if that source appears to be the UW). To address this problem, the Office of Campus Information Security (OCIS) is launching a campaign to educate the campus community about phishing and email scams. OCIS has posted some useful resources online for identifying scams, including FAQs, a list of dos and don’ts, and guidelines for those who are preparing legitimate mass emails so that those mailing aren’t treated as phishing attempts. Please familiarize yourself with these resources. And remember that if you have ANY doubts about an email being legitimate, do not respond. Instead, check with your local IT staff or the DoIT Help Desk.
