Procedures for conducting criminal background checks on new employees

Per Board of Regent policy 20-19 , all UW institutions must conduct criminal background checks on all new employees, including faculty, academic staff and classified staff (with limited exceptions). This policy went into effect December 1, 2007 (see FAQs on Criminal Background Checks posted 12/07/07 in eCALS). To request a criminal background check for new hires in CALS, the department should email the following information to Tonya Messer in the CALS human resources office at

  • Date of Birth
  • Social Security Number
  • Resume (may be attached in email or faxed)
  • Complete funding string-Must include UDDS, fund/account/activity (Example: A070300 144 4 PK70)

Once the criminal background check has been cleared, Tonya will notify both the department and the payroll office via email.
