A Feb. 15 workshop will focus exclusively on practical implications of the Sloan Project research to working with students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
The presentation by Dr. Angela Byars-Winston and the Sloan Foundation Research Team, titled From Theory to Application: Practical Strategies for Improving STEM Student Retention, takes place Friday, February 15, 2008, 11 a.m. -1 p.m. in Room 240 Union South.
We will provide participants with information to help them understand important concepts to focus their retention efforts to support underrepresented students pursuing STEM majors. The majority of the time will be spent in interactive sessions facilitated by the Sloan Project staff where participants will observe, practice, and strategize useful skills to reinforce STEM students’ beliefs in their academic abilities, build effective relationships, and reduce academic barriers. Participants will leave the workshop with a packet of intervention strategies and useful resources to reinforce the workshop content.
* Overview of Sloan Project research regarding effect of students’ beliefs on STEM retention
* Demonstration of effective communication skills to enhance relationships with underrepresented STEM students
* Facilitated small group discussion and practice of retention strategies using student comments gathered by Sloan Project study
