Young Scholar grants for research in Germany

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation offers fellowships to enable highly qualified young U.S. scientists and scholars holding a doctorate to carry out a research project of their choice in Germany. Scientists and scholars of all academic disciplines may apply. Fellowship holders must select their own academic hosts. The fellowships support research stays for 9 to 18 months within a period of up to three years. Fellowship holders are expected to spend at least 3 consecutive months per year in Germany. Visits may be at any time of year. The fellowships provide a monthly stipend of between EUR 2,100 and EUR 3,000; additional schemes of financial assistance are available for language training, travel, mobility, accompanying spouses and children, etc. Applications may be submitted at any time.The age limit is 40 years. Exceptions to this can be made, and maternity leave will be taken into account with regard to the age limit. Candidates must hold U.S. citizenship or citizenship of other nations with a residence permit in the United States (minimum residency of five years after Ph.D.). The permanent residence must be located in the USA. Canadidates must hold a doctorate or comparable academic degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) or have done research work over several years, convincingly demonstrated by publications in internationally recognized academic journals. Applications by younger scientists and scholars approaching their doctorate degree are accepted on submission of the text of their thesis.

Scholars in the humanities must have a good knowledge of German if it is needed to carry out the project successfully.
