Going, going, gone: Livestock Auction 101

Sept. 18 was a busy day for the students, staff, and faculty members who conducted the Third Annual Badger Production Sale of purebred sheep from the Arlington Agricultural Research Station. The event grossed more than $20,000, and students involved received credit and got great experience organizing and conducting a public auction of purebred livestock. “We sold excess purebred ewe lambs and a few purebred rams from the sheep flock at the Arlington station,” explains Dave Thomas, chair and professor of animal sciences.
Animal Sciences undergraduate students receiving credit for this activity in 2010 include Becky Keel, Bailey Quam, Liz Schultz and Maura Wieners. The students are directed by Dave Thomas ( Prof. of Animal Science), Bernie O’Rourke (Extension Livestock Youth Specialist) and Todd Taylor (Manager of the Arlington Sheep Unit).
