Grow, an alumni magazine devoted to the life sciences, has earned recognition for “Publishing Improvement” as part of the Best of District V Awards for the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).
According to CASE, “Entries should demonstrate outstanding improvement of a print magazine that has taken place over a two-year period.” Judges evaluate entries based on design improvement, methodology that led to the improvements, and a clear content strategy.
Launched in 2007, Grow is published three times per year (spring, summer, and fall) by the UW–Madison College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS). The magazine reports on the most significant aspects of research, teaching, and outreach at the college.
Staff in the CALS Office of External Relations undertook a multi-year magazine “refresh” effort for Grow, which involved extensive research and reader engagement while maintaining a regular publication schedule. The initiative resulted in a modernized masthead and cover, new fonts, a fresh color palette, and a revised content structure, among other improvements. The fall 2021 issue was the first to utilize the refreshed design.
CASE is a global nonprofit association dedicated to educational professionals who work in alumni relations, communications, development, marketing, and advancement services. Each year, the council holds a Circle of Excellence Awards for all members from which district-specific awards are also selected. District V, the Great Lakes District, includes more than 400 member organizations and 2,500 representatives in six states.
