CALS receives funds in federal FY2023 appropriations legislation
The $1.7 trillion fiscal year (FY) 2023 omnibus appropriations bill recently passed by the U.S. Congress includes $37.5M in funds targeted for specific CALS programs.
With support from Senator Tammy Baldwin and Representative Mark Pocan, several projects in the college will receive directed funding. Notably, $6M is included to construct a headquarters facility at the north farm on the Marshfield Agricultural Research Station the college shares with the USDA Dairy Forage Research Center. This 5,700 square foot facility will provide restrooms with showers, break space, and meeting space for 50 people, as well as significantly expanding possible research by creating accommodations for researchers who want to engage in 24-hour animal studies and need to remain onsite for this type of close observation.
Full list of CALS programs receiving funding:
- $6 million for the Marshfield Ag Research Dairy Facility to build a headquarters facility at the north station.
- $5 million for UW-Madison to continue the Institutes for Rural Partnership program for a second year ($15 million total for the three institutions originally funded in FY 2022).
- $25 million for the Dairy Business Innovation Initiatives program.
- $2.5 million for the Genome to Phenome Initiative.
- Waiver of the requirement for a match in the USDA NIFA Specialty Crop Research Initiative, so applicants will not be required to include a match in FY2023.
Additionally, the National Institutes of Health will receive $47.5 billion, which is a 5.6 percent increase, and the National Science Foundation will receive its largest increase ever—just over $1 billion. The omnibus package also includes $1.8 billion to begin implementation of the CHIPS and Science Act
