Mentors sought for new support network for CALS graduate students and postdocs of color

The following message is from the admin team of the new Mentorship Opportunities in Science & Agriculture for Individuals of Color (MOSAIC) network: 


Our names are Korede Olugbenle, Jenyne Loarca, and Becca Honeyball, graduate students in plant sciences at UW–Madison. We are reaching out because we are developing a mentorship network called MOSAIC (Mentorship Opportunities in Science & Agriculture for Individuals of Color), geared towards graduate students and postdocs of color in our communities, and we are looking to expand recruitment of mentors beyond our immediate sphere.

Because of the limited number of BIPOC faculty in our predominantly white institution, students of color struggle to find mentors with shared life experiences, which contributes to feelings of isolation. Our hope for MOSAIC is to aggregate BIPOC faculty, staff, and those working in industry to serve as mentors for BIPOC graduate students and postdocs within the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS), thereby fostering community, increasing visibility and connections, and closing the virtual space between BIPOC in STEM and agricultural fields. Involvement in this initiative can take the form of one-on-one mentorship, group gatherings for lunch & discuss topics, as well as committee-style problem solving and guidance from mentors at large.
