Over the next few weeks, eCALS will highlight each winner of a 2019 CALS Award. Winners were recognized at an award ceremony on Wednesday, May 1.
Congratulations to Sara Patterson, recipient of the CALS 2019 Equity and Diversity Award. Patterson is a professor of horticulture and the faculty director of the Science and Medicine Graduate Research Scholars program, a fellowship program for underrepresented graduate students.
The SciMed GRS program began in 2008 with 18 scholars, and under Patterson’s leadership, the program has grown to over 140 enrolled students. At the same time, the enrollment of underrepresented minority students in the 38 programs affiliated with SciMed GRS increased from five percent to 12 percent, demonstrating the broader reach of the program’s influence.
Patterson goes above and beyond to support and retain students, and she knows all SciMed GRS students on a personal level. Because of her dedication, the program maintains an excellent retention rate of 96 percent. Her advice, mentorship, kindness, and ability to provide safe and inclusive environments for everyone will have a lasting impact for years to come. This entry was posted in Awards and honors and tagged horticulture by caschneider3.
