Calling all inventors: Apply by Jan. 25 for D2P’s spring programs

The following is a recent message from Andrew Richards, director of D2P:

Dear UW–Madison faculty, staff, and students:

Our campus has a passion for problem solving and a long history of transforming groundbreaking research discoveries into innovative products and services that change the world.

Are you an inventor interested in joining the growing list of successful companies being spun out of UW-Madison?

Do you know the main reason most startup companies fail, and how to avoid it? Do you understand the steps and strategies you can employ to ensure that your idea for a company has increased odds of being successful?

If you are an innovator or entrepreneur working to bring compelling solutions to the marketplace, we want to hear from you.

UW–Madison’s Discovery to Product (D2P) is accepting applications for two spring semester courses to help campus innovators commercialize their groundbreaking ideas, Innovation to Market (I2M) and Igniter. All D2P programs are free and open to UW–Madison faculty, staff, and students.Applications for both programs are due on Friday, January 25.

Innovation to Market (I2M) is a five-week course that begins on Thursday, February 14 and meets weekly on Thursday mornings from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm, concluding on Thursday, March 14. I2M is ideal for individuals or teams that are just getting started with an innovation. Participants will learn how to avoid one of the main reasons startups fail: building something nobody wants. Minimizing this risk involves getting out of the lab and going out into the field to interview real people to refine what’s known as product-market fit. Learn more and apply for I2M.

Igniter is an intensive eight-week course that begins on Tuesday, March 5 and meets weekly on Tuesday mornings from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm through April 30 (no class during spring recess). Igniter is designed for teams that are further along in the process of developing their innovation, and includes practice on all the steps and strategies that increase the odds of success in launching a startup company. Funding to continue work on the startup after the course may be available to teams that successfully create and validate their business model. Learn more and apply for Igniter.

The deadline to apply to join either the Spring I2M or Igniter cohorts is Friday, January 25. If you have any questions regarding the programs, please contact D2P at  Can’t attend the programs due to schedule conflicts? D2P can still help. If you are interested in meeting with an innovation and commercialization specialist to get advice and guidance on your idea, please visit our website to request an individual coaching session. We’d love to meet you and learn how you want to change the world.
