Nik Hawkins will join the CALS Office of External Relations and Advancement team on May 1 as publications manager. He is stepping into the role currently held by Joan Fischer, who joined the college in 2010 and is set to retire later this spring. In this position, Hawkins will edit Grow magazine and manage other significant communication projects for the college.
Hawkins has 16 years of professional experience as a writer and editor and 12 years of experience in publications. He comes to CALS from the UW-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM), where he has been Director of Communications and Public Relations since 2012. At the SVM, he managed the school’s strategic communications, print and digital publications, marketing, media relations and public relations efforts. He also served as the chief editor, writer and photographer for the school’s tri-annual magazine, On Call, which he transformed from a tabloid newsletter into a magazine in fall 2016.
Before his SVM role, Hawkins was with the Wisconsin Center for the Advancement of Postsecondary Education in the UW-Madison School of Education from 2004-2012.
Hawkins has earned two degrees from UW-Madison: a bachelor’s degree with a double major in journalism/mass communication and history in 2001 and a master’s in educational leadership and policy analysis in 2005.
