Hello fellow science volunteers,
Happy 2015. I’m writing with details of the 2015 Family Science Nights program and hope that many of you will once again consider volunteering for one or more events.
As you may know, schools and community centers request volunteers for events and then we help to connect volunteers like you (from UW-Madison, Madison College, local biotech companies, etc.) to do hands-on science activities with kids and their families. Most events are in the weekday evenings this semester and last a few hours. If you are new to the program, you can find out details on my website: http://gasch.genetics.wisc.edu/580.htm
So far we have 13 schools requesting presenters for their events, with more requests expected over the next month (last year there were >20 events). Anyone can sign up to volunteer for one or more events (and arrange carpooling) using this Google signup form:
Presenters or outreach groups can pick any activity they want. You can choose from suggestions on my website (see link above), develop your own activity, or contact me for help picking/designing something around your interests. I am happy to provide reimbursements for materials (please check with me first). Activities need not be fancy to work well – the important part is to get kids engaged in asking questions through hands-on exploration.
PLEASE if you sign up take this commitment seriously – schools are counting on you to show up.
Please contact me if you have any questions about the program, and please share this information with other interested volunteers and outreach groups.
