F.H. King Students for Sustainable Agriculture looking for a garden director
F.H. King Students for Sustainable Agricultureare looking for a new garden director. The Garden Director will direct all aspects of the garden including planning, planting, maintenance, irrigation, propagation, harvesting, pest management, bee keeping and other aspects of land stewardship. None of these tasks will be done alone, however. You would work closely with another experienced Garden Director who has managed the F.H. King garden the previous year. You will also be in charge of coordinating garden volunteers and garden interns – some of which have proven exceedingly unruly in the past. This being said this job will provide you with a truly unique opportunity to learn the management techniques and agricultural knowledge to potentially operate your own market garden. It also provides you with an opportunity for absurd, agriculturally-related herculean tasks that will give you bragging rights for many years to come.
This is a student hourly position meaning that one must be a registered UW-Madison student to apply. The position will begin after training in early December. The hourly rate is $9.49. Ideally, we are looking for someone who would be willing to commit to the position for two years. We are asking for a two-year commitment to allow for a year of assistance and training with an experienced Garden Director, followed by a year of assistance and teaching to prepare another student to take over responsibilities in the garden. The position requires 10-20 hrs. during the school year, depending on the point in the season, and 30 hrs. during the summer months. Hours are not based on a set schedule and are flexible to accommodate to student’s schedules.
