From ants to mini-golf to meat and cheese: CALS goes to the State Fair

Last Wednesday, UW-Madison took over Central Mall at the Wisconsin State Fair for the annual UW-Madison Day. Thousands of fairgoers learned about CALS-related topics at some of the UW-Extension exploration stations. In addition, the “CALS corner” included cheese and sausage making demonstrations with Food Science and Meat Science; turf grass experts with interactive miniature golf that was a huge hit with adults and kids alike; and a leaf cutter ant game designed to help explain what leaf cutter ants can teach us about bioenergy.

For the third year in a row, UW-Madison Day has also sponsored a school supply drive to benefit Milwaukee Public Schools. This was a record-breaking year with 125 55-gallon bags of supplies and over $5,000.
