When it comes to concocting new foods, UW-Madison is definitely a hotbed. This week two CALS student food development teams learned that they’ll be among the five finalists in the Disney Product Development Competition at this summer’s Institute of Food Technologists 2012 conference in Las Vegas. Thirty-six teams were in the running, so having two from Wisconsin is a big deal, made bigger by the fact that another Wisconsin team made it to this year’s finals in the main IFT collegiate contest being held at the same event, made bigger yet by the fact that this is the second year in a row that Wisconsin has fielded three teams.
The Disney competition focuses on creating healthy, Disney-themed products targeted towards children. Products include Peanut Butter Jamsicles (a frozen twist on the classic sandwich) and Pit-Stop (a fun smoothie beverage inspired by the Cars movie).
