From March 24th-26th, 2011, the African Studies Program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is organizing a major conference and celebration of 50 years of the Peace Corps, with particular but not exclusive attention to Africa. Many luminaries will speak (including Aaron Williams, the current Peace Corps director). There will be evaluative or critical panels on many aspects of the Peace Corps. Writers and other creative artists will present their work. There will be opportunities for volunteers to record stories of their own Peace Corps service. And of course there will be a party, possibly the ultimate Peace Corps party, held in the Great Hall of the University of Wisconsin’s Memorial Union, featuring two African bands.
