Horticulture welcomes new fruit crops specialist

The Department of Horticulture will welcome Rebecca Harbut as an assistant professor for fruit crops extension on Nov. 9. Dr. Harbut received her Ph.D. degree in spring 2009 from Cornell University and Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees from the University of Guelph in Horticulture and Agriculture, respectively.

Her Ph.D. dissertation work focused on the physiology, biochemistry and morphology of strawberry. Dr. Harbut has a strong background in general fruit crop management and physiology, in both field and laboratory-oriented work. As a graduate student, Dr. Harbut published scientific and outreach articles and conducted a number of extension presentations on fruit crop production and management. She also won a number of awards for her work, including an outstanding teaching assistant award for teaching at Cornell. Dr. Harbut is excited about coming to Wisconsin and working with campus colleagues as well as industry members, fruit growers, and Cooperative Extension staff. Her position responsibilities will include extension, research, and teaching.
