Request for applications for Higher Education for Development funding

Higher Education for Development (HED), in cooperation with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), is currently issuing several Requests for Applications for competitive awards to support higher education partnerships. Experts from U.S. higher education institutions are encouraged to apply to work with their counterparts in developing countries on partnership programs in fields such as public health, economics, journalism, and early childhood education.

Paraguay: Collaborative Training in Epidemiology and Public Health
Extended Deadline: Applications due April 23, 2008, 5:00 p.m. ET
HED anticipates making one award of up to $300,000 for a three-year partnership to strengthen the capacity of higher education in Paraguay to provide training in epidemiology and public health information.

Albania: Increasing Institutional Capacity in Agricultural Economics
Applications due April 11, 2008, 5:00 p.m. ET
One three-year award of up to $300,000 for a partnership with the Agricultural University of Tirana (AUT) to strengthen faculty capacity to provide graduate education in agricultural economics and to provide consulting and training services to the Ministry of Agriculture, extension agencies, and producer associations in Albania.

Guyana: Strengthening Mass Communication and Journalism
Applications due: April 25, 2008, 5:00 p.m. ET
HED anticipates making one award, contingent on USAID funding, of up to $300,000 for a three-year period for a higher education partnership with the Centre for Communications Studies at the University of Guyana (UG) to strengthen the Centre’s journalism and mass communication program.

Jordan: Strengthening Early Childhood Education
Applications due: April 28, 2008, 5:00 p.m. ET
One award of up to $450,000 for this three-year higher education partnership to enhance and improve the Early Childhood Development undergraduate degree program in two higher education institutions in Jordan as a way to increase teachers’ skills and competencies in early childhood education.

Egypt: Enhancing Capacity for Research in Economics
Applications due: May 15, 2008, 5:00 p.m. ET
HED anticipates making one (1) award of up to $400,000 for this three year higher education partnership with the Cairo University Department of Economics, Faculty of Economics and Political Science (FEPS) to expand the capacity of the Department to serve as a regional hub for teaching, research and service in economics.
