Deadline is Nov. 1 for the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship, which provides provides $7,500 to fund the undergraduate education of students who plan to get a Ph.D. and pursue a research career in mathematics, the sciences or engineering. Deadline is Nov. 18 for the Harry S. Truman Scholarship, which provides $30,000 for graduate study leading to a career in public service. Details follow:
Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship, campus deadline November 1, 2007
The Goldwater Scholarship provides $7,500 to fund the undergraduate education of students who plan to get a Ph.D. and pursue a research career in mathematics, the sciences or engineering. (Note: Students who plan to get an MD/Ph.D. would qualify, but not those who plan to pursue an MD alone.) Successful candidates have a strong academic record (3.8 GPA or above) and previous research experience. Current juniors and sophomores–defined as having 1 or 2 additional year(s) of undergraduate study after 2007-08–may apply for the Goldwater. UW-Madison nominates 4 students each year to compete nationally for 300 scholarships. In recent years nine UW-Madison students have won Goldwater Scholarships. Harry S. Truman Scholarship, campus deadline November 19, 2007
The Truman Scholarship provides $30,000 for graduate study leading to a career in public service (government, public-interest or non-profit organizations, research and/or educational organizations, public or private schools). The Foundation seeks students who hope to become “change agents” in their communities by improving the ways in which government, non-profit organizations, or educational institutions serve the greater public. Successful candidates have extensive records of campus and community service, are committed to a service career, and have outstanding leadership potential. Current juniors –defined as having 1 additional year of undergraduate study after 2007-08– may apply for the Truman. UW-Madison nominates 4 students each year to compete nationally for ~65 scholarships. In recent years three UW-Madison students have won Truman Scholarships.
