Nominations sought for Wisconsin Distinguished Professorships

UW System is inviting nominations systemwide for three vacancies in the Wisconsin Distinguished Professorship (WDP) program for appointments beginning July 1, 2007 and ending June 30, 2012. Approval of such appointments is subject to a review by outside panelists appointed by WS and the Board of Regents. Dean Jahn would like to receive any nominations no later than March 14 — two weeks before they are due in the Provost’s office. UW-Madison is eligible to receive up to nine WDP and we currently stand at eight, so our campus is eligible to receive one more professorship in this program. Note that private funds must be secured to match dollar-for-dollar the public funds provided as part of the professorship. Attached is a roster of the current Wisconsin Distinguished Professors and a copy of ACPS 3.4 (guidelines for nomination and review, instructions for developing the portfolio, and information on the required match with private monies). Please read these guidelines carefully to determine if you would like to submit one or more nominations for this program.Key guidelines include:

  • Preference for external candidates
  • Strong (potential) link between the candidate and Wisconsin’s economic development
  • Support, in the form of matching funds, from industry for this specific person.

Provost Farrell would like to know soon if the College intends to nominate a candidate. “I do not anticipate limiting the number of nominations we submit, but if we get a large (say more than 5) number of potential candidates, we may want some internal down-selection process to avoid having you spend a great deal of time putting a package together that doesn’t have a good chance of success,” he says.

Six copies of all materials are due to the Provost’s office by March 28. There is a fair amount of work to be done in putting the packets together, so action needs to be taken quickly to meet the UWS deadline. Feel free to contact Provost Farrell if you have any questions.
