CALS helps welcome new students at Bakke Block Party

On Friday, August 29, CALS joined University Recreation and Wellbeing at the Bakke Block Party. It was a bit rainy, but the Department of Animal and Dairy Sciences, the Department of Biological Systems Engineering, Babcock Dairy Store, and Bucky’s Varsity Meats braved the elements and helped welcome both new and returning students to campus!

Biological systems engineering brought tractors, including a student-designed tractor, for students to climb aboard. Members of the UW–Madison American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers student organization and the Badger Pulling Team student organization were there to answer questions and talk to students about their organizations.

Three calves from the Dairy Cattle Center were a popular attraction — students lined up to meet the calves, pet them, and take a selfie. Many students were surprised to learn that campus has an 84-cow dairy herd on campus!

If students were looking for a bite to eat, they could stop by Babcock Dairy Store for cheese and ice cream, or Bucky’s Varsity Meats for some meat sticks.
