Grow magazine wins award for cranberry cover

The Fall 2022 issue of Grow, CALS’ magazine devoted to the life sciences, garnered a third place award in the Publication Covers category of the University Photographers Association of America’s Annual Publications Competition. Editor Nik Hawkins, graphic designer Janelle Jordan Naab and photographer Michael P. King produced the cover, illustrating a feature story about UW–Madison’s cold-hardy cranberry research. All winning entries can be viewed here.
The CALS External Relations team setup a makeshift photography studio in Hawkins’ garage and utilized a specialty cocktail ice cube maker to make large, transparent ice cubes with captive cranberries.
The award was presented at UPAA’s annual symposium held at the University of Notre Dame in June. The contest receives entries from higher education institutions large and small from across the U.S., and categories are not divided by institution size or the publication’s scope. It is judged by a committee of designers, editors, and marketing professionals from the symposium’s host institution.
