Land acknowledgement workshop series for CALS participants

Anyone doing land-based research at UW–Madison is invited to join the Entomology and Horticulture Diversity Committees for a three-part workshop series about land acknowledgements running in April and May. Each workshop will build on the previous one and include reflection questions for participants to bridge between sessions.

Workshop 1: How to learn the history of stolen land to inform land acknowledgements

April 8th from 2:30-4:00 PM in Plant Sciences 128 or on Zoom.  Registration is required before April 1 for in-person and virtual attendance.

Before writing or giving a land acknowledgement, it is critical that we can identify whose land we occupy, learn about the Indigenous history of this land prior to and during colonization, and understand relevant treaties. In this interactive workshop, speakers Dr. Sasha Suarez and Zada Ballew will provide us with the tools and resources we need to learn the Indigenous history of the land we occupy, regardless of where we live. They will provide hands-on practice locating positionality, discuss research best practices, teach how to critically evaluate the historical sources that are available to avoid narratives that uphold settler colonialism and provide us with resources for learning histories directly from Native Nations.

Recordings will be available. This workshop series is being organized by the Entomology and Horticulture Diversity Committees.
