UW–Madison enabling NetID login for Anthropic’s Claude AI service
This information was sent on behalf of DoIT Productivity & Collaborative Solutions.
On Monday, Nov. 2, UW–Madison will enable NetID Login for Anthropic’s Claude AI service. This change will not affect existing Claude accounts registered with @wisc.edu email addresses. Account holders will notice a change only in how they log in.
This is a foundational step toward making Claude available as an enterprise service for UW departments to purchase. It also gives people who created Claude accounts with their @wisc.edu email addresses a more secure single sign-on (SSO) login method.
What’s changing:
Starting Nov. 2, Claude users will see two options when they log in with an @wisc.edu email address:
- Continue with SSO — Recommended for all @wisc.edu accounts, including existing personal, Pro and departmental Team accounts as well as UW enterprise accounts. This option logs you in to your existing account using UW–Madison NetID Login and Duo Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).
- Continue with email — Sends an expiring login code to your email, as before.
Both options will log you in to your existing account. However, later this year we will turn off the “Continue with email” option and require all @wisc.edu accounts to log in with NetID. We recommend switching to “Continue with SSO” starting Nov. 2.
What to do
- Existing @wisc.edu account holders: Starting Monday, Nov. 2, choose “Continue with SSO” when you log in at claude.ai/login to authenticate with your UW NetID and Duo MFA.

What to know
- Personal accounts and chat history stay intact. More than 12,000 people have created Claude accounts with @wisc.edu email addresses. They keep full access to their existing accounts, chat history, custom projects and paid subscriptions when they log in with “Continue with SSO.”
- You’ll be able to switch between enterprise and personal workspaces. Once enterprise licenses are available, UW account holders can switch between their enterprise and personal accounts from the Claude profile menu after logging in with SSO.
- Enterprise data protections require an enterprise license. While enabling SSO will make Claude accounts more secure, only enterprise license holders will gain the enhanced data and privacy protections of the university’s enterprise contract with Anthropic.
- Use a non-UW email address to create new personal accounts. If you create a new personal Claude account for non-university use, use a personal email address — not your @wisc.edu address. Anthropic doesn’t let you change the email address on your account, so a personal address ensures you keep access if you leave UW–Madison.
