The National Science Foundation (NSF) has released the NSF State and Regional AI Infrastructure Hubs funding opportunity, with institutions limited to participation in one proposal.

The opportunity aims to expand access to the compute infrastructure needed for AI-enabled scientific discovery as well as supporting workforce development through access to compute, data and other AI resources. The program will support flexible state or multi-state regional hubs, each structured as a coalition of institutions of higher education partnering with state and local governments, research institutions, philanthropies and industry. While NSF will provide funding for each of the Hub’s coordination, AI infrastructure workforce development and faculty training, the Hubs will be responsible for raising funding for new or expanded AI resources.

Kyle Cranmer, director of the Data Science Institute, Patrick McDaniel, associate dean for research in the College of Computing and Artificial Intelligence, and Todd Shechter, chief technology officer at DoIT, are leading UW–Madison’s response to this opportunity.
