Madison Fire Department training at 1800 University Ave. July 13-15
As UW-Madison prepares for the upcoming demolition of 1800 University Ave., Facilities Planning & Management (FP&M) is partnering with the Madison Fire Department (MFD) to use the building to help local firefighters train for real-world rescue drills, planned for July 13-15. After a decade of vacancy, the building and its aged infrastructure has reached the end of its useful life. Removing the building allows the site to transition into potential sites for future campus use.
CALS offices near this area may notice some activity during this period.
What to Expect
- Strictly non-burn: There will be no fire, smoke, or live flames.
- Visible activity: Training involves interior drills, pulling water hoses, and practicing rescue breaches (such as cutting holes in the roof/façade).
- Personnel and signage: Expect an increased presence of fire trucks and personnel. MFD will place “Training in Progress” signs around the property.
FP&M is working closely with MFD to ensure the site remains safe. The site will be resecured immediately following the exercises to prepare for demolition. We appreciate your support and understanding as we partner with our local emergency personnel.
Please feel free to reach out to FP&M Marketing & Communications at communications@fpm.wisc.edu if you have any questions.
