Rodrigo Werle receives Weed Science Society of America Early Career Outstanding Scientist Award

Rodrigo Werle, associate professor and extension cropping systems weed scientist in the Department of Plant and Agroecosystem Sciences, received the Early Career Outstanding Scientist Award from the Weed Science Society of America (WSSA). The award recognizes outstanding young scientists who have demonstrated originality and creativity, have made a notable contribution to weed science and have potential for continued excellence. Werle received the award during the 2026 WSSA Annual Meeting in February.
Werle joined CALS in 2018, and his research and outreach program focuses on practical, economically viable, and environmentally sustainable weed management for corn, soybean and small grain systems. In his work, he emphasizes herbicide selection, resistance mitigation, cover crops and precision herbicide application technologies. He leads the WiscWeeds Research and Extension Program and takes part in various field days and outreach presentations, engaging with stakeholders and maximizing the reach and impact of his program.
Werle leads a multidisciplinary team of graduate students, postdocs and academic staff, mentoring young talent and guiding research that is both scientifically rigorous and directly translatable to growers. He currently advises eight graduate students and serves as coach of the Badger Weeds Team. Werle is also an active member of the North Central Weed Science Society (NCWSS) and serves as an associate editor for Weed Technology.
