Bird flu resources for employees and students working with cattle

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the current Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (H5N1) bird flu risk to the general public remains low. However, people with job- or recreation-related exposures to infected animals are at increased risk, especially if exposures happen without using proper personal protective equipment.

Agricultural Research Stations with dairy cattle and CALS personnel have partnered with UW–Madison Environment Health & Safety, the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, campus veterinarians and USDA safety representatives to develop training and protocols in the event that H5N1 is detected in dairy cattle in Wisconsin.
