Using AI for instruction

Campus has provided new guidance for AI Meeting Assistants.  If you are planning on using AI meeting assistants for instruction, please be sure to carefully review the Tips for Instructors put together by UW’s Center for Teaching, Learning & Mentoring (CTLM). The tips include ensuring that you are using the services approved by the university, ensuring that the AI-generated text is maintained as a public record and reviewed for accuracy, being transparent with students, and considering the impact of recordings on student engagement. Be aware that AI Meeting Assistants may not meet accommodation needs.

Given the prevalence of AI, UW-Madison recommends adding a statement to your course syllabus and communicating to students about expectations regarding AI use. You can use this resource from CTLM as a basis for this statement and conversation with students.

Microsoft CoPilot is currently the only Q/A generative AI tool approved by UW-Madison for instruction, due to privacy, equitable access, and intellectual property considerations. Data from you and students are protected and are not incorporated into the AI database, and CoPilot is free for all faculty and students.
