New suicide prevention training available for faculty and staff
UHS has developed a new training, “Faculty and Staff Suicide Prevention Training: Recognize, Respond, Refer,” that is now available for all UW–Madison faculty and staff on Canvas.
UHS first introduced this kind of online training for faculty and staff in 2021. This 2024 version includes updated and additional data, guidance and resources for you to better support student mental health on campus. Enroll in the training and share this information with your unit or department.
This training is designed for anyone who advises, teaches, supervises or supports students. Whether you are looking for a quick refresher ahead of the coming academic year or considering suicide prevention for the first time, completing this training is one concrete action you can take to better support your students. The training takes around one hour to complete, and you can start, stop and return to it on your own time. The training also provides you with downloadable resources to support you in the future and is the first step for units or departments interested in requesting a customized prevention workshop.
UHS also offers online suicide prevention training for Undergraduate and Graduate and Professional Students.
As a reminder, UHS offers no-cost mental health services for students, including individual and group counseling, psychiatry, stress management and 24/7 crisis services. For an overview of on-campus services available, visit the UHS website.
