Rhinelander ARS offers visitors warm welcome

Becky Eddy, RARS superintendent, shows a greenhouse facility to a visitor in July 2023.

Rhinelander Agricultural Research Station is one of the college’s most outlying stations – and a welcoming spot after a long drive. Visitors are treated to tours of the station’s headquarters, greenhouses, and fields led by superintendent Becky Eddy.

Rhinelander ARS, located in Oneida County on 370 acres of loamy sand soil, is one of the nation’s top potato research facilities and home of UW–Madison’s potato breeding program. The station also hosts a variety of natural resource management research, including studies related forestry management, bioenergy systems, and the phytoremediation of soil and water. Outreach takes many forms, including hosting summer interns, educational series for community members, and the annual Night on the Farm event to harvest surplus potatoes for the local food pantry.
