New “Leadership in the Lab” series for early career STEM faculty set to launch

The Leadership in the Lab series is a new, semester-long, cohort program designed specifically for early-career STEM faculty who are, or will be, leading a laboratory at UW—Madison. Facilitated by the Learning and Talent Development Team in the Office of Human Resources at UW–Madison, the 90-minute weekly sessions are geared toward developing values and competencies that can result in positive leadership outcomes, enabling these new leaders to effectively maximize the potential of their research teams.

Transitioning into a leadership position can present unique challenges. Often, faculty who are experts in their field have not had the opportunity to learn and develop the necessary skills to inspire and guide their teams. After doing extensive research and talking with staff in the UW—Madison laboratory research space, the Leadership in the Lab series has been carefully crafted to address these specific needs by offering a dynamic curriculum tailored to the research environment, including:

  1. Leadership Essentials: Participants will learn essential leadership principles and concepts applicable to research environments. Topics covered will include effective communication, team building, performance management and feedback, conflict resolution, and fostering a positive work culture.
  2. Tangible Strategies: Participants will be equipped each week with specific tools and strategies that can be immediately implemented. Participants will have dedicated time to learn and practice these strategies with other cohort members before considering how they can apply to their own lab.
  3. Peer Networking: As a cohort of learners, participants will have the opportunity to engage with peers from across the UW Madison campus, fostering new relationships and expanding their professional network. This will facilitate knowledge-sharing and provide additional perspectives in navigating leadership challenges.

The Leadership in the Lab series is set to launch in the 2024 spring semester and will provide a unique opportunity for participants to give feedback on the program design and content. Seats are limited and all interested faculty should complete the application as soon as possible. First consideration of applications will occur in October 2023.
