CALS Wellness Committee tip: Dane County Farmers’ Market has returned to the Square
It’s time to get your walking shoes and reusable bags ready because the Dane County Farmers’ Market is back on the Capitol Square! The 2023 outdoor season runs each Saturday from April 15th until November 11th.
The market is full of different vendors who bring things such as bakery items, meat and dairy, vegetables, fruits, plants, and other specialty items. Fresh produce currently available include mushrooms, asparagus, radishes, rhubarb, arugula, and spinach.
At the Dietetics and Nutrition Club’s recent Lunch and Learn session titled “Spring Clean Your Eating” held on Apr. 18, attendees learned about the benefits of seasonal eating on gut health, and how diet can impact the gut microbiota. The Dane County Farmers’ Market provides a great way to include a wide array of local, in-season products in your diet, supporting what was learned in the Lunch and Learn session.
You can make so many delicious meals with this in-season produce. The Healthy Seasonal Recipes website has a search bar where you can type in the seasonal vegetable you’re looking to cook with, and it will provide different recipe options!
The official Dane County Farmers’ Market website provides information on various ways to get to the market, along with accessible parking. As noted on the site, for health and food safety reasons, only service animals are permitted to join at the market.
