Soil science hosts inaugural Bucky Soil Auger Competition

On Friday, Oct. 21, the Department of Soil Science hosted the first ever Bucky Soil Auger Competition. Soil science students, staff, faculty, and friends gathered at Eagle Heights Community Garden to test their soil augering skills.

A soil auger is a tool used for sampling soil — in order to get the samples, you need to twist the auger into the ground by hand. Ten teams competed to see who could auger a hole 1.2 meters into the ground the fastest. Each team had three attempts at augering and the winner was chosen based on their average time.

While waiting between rounds, teams got to enjoy snacks, refreshments, and a beautiful Homecoming Friday!
