Abstract: Dairy cattle nitrogen use efficiency is often in the range of 25 – 35% of ingested nitrogen secreted as milk protein nitrogen. Increasing nitrogen use efficiency without reducing productivity can occur through optimizing nitrogen intake, improving metabolizable protein or amino acid quality and composition, or both. Feeding to optimize nitrogen intake by balancing diets for metabolizable amino acids requires a knowledge of amino acid bioavailability. The objective of this presentation is to discuss the concept of bioavailability as applied to the dairy cow and review some techniques for estimating amino acid bioavailability.
