Starting on Aug. 29, CALS began welcoming students to campus with orientation and other activities for new and returning students. The first undergraduates to arrive were students involved in CALS QuickStart, a summer program designed to prepare incoming CALS first-year students to succeed in college. Dorm move in for all UW–Madison students started on Aug. 30. The first day of classes was Sept. 8. More than 525 new undergraduates are expected to join CALS this fall.

The photos below show a few of the CALS back-to-school activities that took place as part of the university’s “Wisconsin Welcome” program. A full album of photos is available on CALS Flickr. (Note: Dane County and UW–Madison currently require masks to be worn indoors, but not outdoors, as shown in these photos.)

New CALS students tour the lab of Jennifer Van Os in the Department of Animal and Dairy Sciences at UW–Madison on Aug. 31, 2021. Kim Reuscher, a PhD student in the Van Os Animal Welfare Lab, demonstrates a thermal imaging camera to students doing lab visits that day. In the Van Os lab, researchers use a variety of technologies to study animal behavior from a biological perspective to better understand and improve the welfare of animals, particularly dairy cattle.
