The American Cheese Society (ACS) has bestowed its 2020 Lifetime Achievement Award upon Marianne Smukowski, dairy safety and quality coordinator at the Center for Dairy Research. Smukowski has a degree in Food Science from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and more than 30 years of experience working in regulatory, private industry and academic settings.
“Marianne has dedicated her life to improving the American cheese industry,” the announcement said. “Described by her peers as a selfless and passionate leader, there is few more fitting of the award criteria than Marianne.”
Smukowski has served ACS for many years as a competition judge, liaison to the FDA, and on several committees and the Board of Directors — in 2019, she was elected to her current position as board President.
The ACS Lifetime Achievement Award was created in 2006 by the American Cheese Society Board of Directors to honor an individual whose professional accomplishments have made a significant and lasting impact in the American cheese industry, and whose life and character have earned the respect and admiration of their professional colleagues. Nominees must have served the profession for a minimum of 30 years.
