CALS Wellness Committee tip: Career development

At the beginning of the year we shared the 7 dimensions of wellness. One of the dimensions is Career/Academic. This dimension focuses on planning your future goals. A few things to consider when you think about this dimension are:

  1. Setting and meeting academic and career goals in a healthy way
  2. Challenging yourself to new life experiences
  3. Having supportive peers who share similar goals

One model that can help guide professional development is the 70-20-10 model. This model outlines that employee growth comes from 70% on-the-job experience, 20%, interactions with others, and 10% from formal professional development.  More information about professional development can be found at this link: https://hr.wisc.edu/professional-development/

Employees, managers, and the UW–Madison all have a part in helping to develop your career. You can find more information here: https://hr.wisc.edu/professional-development/develop-your-career/

For your own employee development, you can:

  1. Engage in career growth
  2. Initiate career conversations with your manager
  3. Set career goals
  4. Create your own professional development plan

As we head into 2020 and a new performance review period, now is a good time to think about your development goals.  Best of luck in 2020 with your career development from the CALS Wellness Committee!
