D2P offers free trainings for campus innovators

Innovation is all about addressing a fundamental need or solving a problem to make the world a better place. Are you an innovator with a creative solution? If you are interested in experiential learning about how to take an idea out of the lab or dorm room and into the marketplace, we want to hear from you.

UW–Madison’s Discovery to Product (D2P) is accepting applications for two fall semester courses to help campus innovators commercialize their ideas, Innovation to Market (I2M) and Igniter. Applications for both programs are due on Thursday, September 19.

Innovation to Market (I2M) is ideal for individuals or teams that are just getting started with an innovation. The course meets for three classroom sessions and two one-on-one mentor sessions, beginning on Wednesday, October 9 and concluding on Wednesday, November 20. Participants in I2M will learn how to avoid one of the main reasons startups fail: building something nobody wants. Minimizing this risk involves getting out of the lab and going out into the field to interview real people to refine what’s known as product-market fit. Learn more and apply for I2M.

Igniter is an intensive eight-week course that begins on Tuesday, October 8 and meets weekly on Tuesdays through December 3 (no class during the week of Thanksgiving). Igniter is designed for teams that are further along in the process of developing their innovation, and includes hands-on work to create and validate all aspects of the business model for the innovation, including distribution channels, cost structures, revenue models, funding sources, and more. Learn more and apply for Igniter.

Not sure which program is right for you, or just curious to learn more about the process of commercializing innovations? D2P is hosting two open house information sessions with free pizza, an overview of programs, and time for questions and answers. The first session will be Friday, September 13 from 11:00 – 11:45 am, and the second session will be Monday, September 16 from 5:00 – 5:45 pm. RSVP here.

All D2P programs are free and open to UW–Madison faculty, staff, and students. The deadline to apply to join the fall cohort for either I2M or Igniter is Thursday, September 19. Can’t attend the programs due to schedule conflicts? D2P can still help. We’d love to meet you and learn how you want to change the world.
