Over the next few weeks, eCALS will highlight each winner of a 2019 CALS Award. Winners were recognized at an award ceremony on Wednesday, May 1.
Congratulations to Marvin Wickens, professor in the Department of Biochemistry, on receiving the 2019 CALS Excellence in International Activities Award! This award recognizes an individual engaged in international research, instruction, outreach, program development, or service.
Wickens’ scholarly international experience began when he was an undergraduate at the University of California, Berkeley. His early international opportunities inspired him to develop similar programs here at UW–Madison. Since their development in 2009, the Summer Cambridge and Oxford Research Experience, or SCORE, and the Summer Program to Experience Research-Germany, or SUPER-G, have attracted over 75 student participants. These programs are high-impact, out-of-classroom experiences that have gained international attention and are often a reason students come to the university.
Each year, Wickens works tirelessly to individually match participants with research groups and mentors that fit their interests. He also takes time to ensure that students are prepared for their trip so they can make the most of their time abroad. His dedication to international experiences and the success of his students make him very deserving of this award.
