CALS rate-based method for graduate assistant pay for fund 142 program and state RAs/TAs

Campus is moving to a new rate-based method for graduate assistant pay. This post includes information about how CALS intends to handle the fund 142 (Hatch, Hatch Multistate, McIntire-Stennis, and Animal Health) research assistant rates, as well as the “state” research assistant and teaching assistant rates. The following policy has been discussed and approved by the CALS deans’ group and the CALS Research Advisory Committee and aligns with existing practice for TAs.

For RA appointments, CALS will fund these stipends at a standard dollar value equivalent to a 50% base rate. If your program provides stipends for 50% appointments above this dollar amount, you can: 1) supplement the base amount to bring it up to the program’s 50% appointment level (preferred option) or 2) provide a less than 50%-time appointment.

For TA appointments, CALS will allocate FTEs based on the 50% rate below. Appointment percentages should be based on workload, with 360 hours per semester as the target for a 50% appointment. If your program provides stipends above the base rate noted below, you can: 1) supplement the base amount to bring it up to the program’s rate or 2) reduce the workload and the appointment percentage.

The 2016-2017 CALS base rate is as follows:

Fund 142 and “State” Research Assistant (fixed)
Title Code: Y41NN
Annual Fixed Rate: $22,081

“State” Teaching Assistants
Title Code: Y33NN
Annual Fixed Rate: $15,961
