CALS collaboration opportunities with Japan’s Obihiro University

Gunasekaran meets with Madison Mayor Paul Soglin and Obihiro Mayor Norihisa Yonezawa during the Madison-Obihiro Sister City 10th Anniversary event held in The Edgewater Hotel on August 30.

In 2015, CALS signed an MOU with Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine (Obihiro) in Japan to explore and develop collaborative opportunities. With funds from the Japanese government, professors Jiwan Palta, Amy Charkowski, Paul Bethke, Shelley Janske, David Spooner, Shinya Ikedi and then CALS IP director John Ferrick visited Japan to formalize the agreement to initiate potato and food science research. Following that, CALS is now actively engaged in joint research with Obihiro. Current CALS IP director Sundaram Gunasekaran also paid a visit to Obihiro and met with the new Obihiro president Dr. Kiyoshi Okuda in May to discuss ways to strengthen the institutions’ joint efforts. This collaboration has now grown with subsequent faculty visits from both sides, and Dr. Shinya Ikeda from Food Science spending his last two summers at Obihiro. Incidentally, the city of Obihiro is a sister city of Madison, with mayors of both cities reciprocating visits.

There are opportunities for research collaboration and sabbatical visits in Obihiro for faculty and post-doctoral researchers in different areas. Please contact CALS IP ( for further information if you would like to explore such opportunities.
