Horiculture celebrates its 125th on June 19 with symposium, party and special dedication

The Department of Horticulture will celebrate its 125th anniversary with a symposium and party on Thursday, June 19. Download an invitation here. The event kicks off with a welcome reception at 9 a.m., followed by a brief tree-planting ceremony in the Allen Centennial Gardens. The symposium will run from 10:30 a.m. to about 3 p.. in the Microbial Sciences Building, after which participants will reconvene in the Allen Centennial Gardens for the 19th annual Horticulture Garden Party.

Please RSVP online at Registration deadline is Tuesday, June 10. Please direct questions to Tricia Check at or (608) 265-8502.

Note: The tree planted in the morning will be larch—a nod to the department’s first faculty member, Emmett Goff, who planted a larch at a spot that is now part of the Allen gardens. The original larch survived into the 21st century. Wood from the original tree is being made into a bench by a local artist through the generosity of the Goff family, who will present the bench to the department at the morning event.
