About that cow in your mailbox
If you’re a UW alum, you may already have received the winter 2014 issue of On Wisconsin, UW-Madison’s alumni magazine, featuring a UW Brown Swiss on the cover. The photo goes with a great feature story by writer John Allen about UW-Madison dairy research. Also interesting is the story-behind-the-story about what it takes to do a studio shot—lights, seamless background and all—in the barn. Dairy science instructor Ted Halbach was in charge of the model, with help from a team of Badger Dairy Club members who did the fitting—the primping that makes her look glamorous—and acted up behind the camera to evoke the alert, ears-forward expression captured by UW photographer Bryce Richter. She was no doubt glad when it was over, but it could have been worse. Early ideas for a shoot location included the top of Bascom Hill and the Union Terrace. Makes a few minutes under lights in the barn sound pretty good.
