Squash will not be sailing on Lake Mendota this year. The Giant Pumpkin Regatta, which has been held every October since 2004, has been called on account of a lack of rain.
“The giant pumpkins didn’t grow well this year because of the heat and drought,” reports Irwin Goldman, CALS horticulture professor. “We had pumpkins, but none were large enough. We tried to buy some from local farmers, but they too suffered from the conditions. We felt we had no other choice, but we hope to be out there again next year.”
