The general public is invited to an Earth Day Open House on Friday, Apr. 22 at the USDA Forest Products Laboratory (FPL), located at One Gifford Pinchot Drive, Madison, WI 53726. During the free event, which runs from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m., visitors will have the opportunity to talk with FPL scientists about current research and view many displays detailing a century of service connecting people to the land. Light snacks will be provided.
Self-guided tours will be available throughout the new 87,000 square foot Centennial Research Facility, which includes facilities for weatherization research, advanced composites, preservation and engineering mechanics testing. The Research Demonstration House and its adjacent Carriage House will be open to highlight modern advances in housing design, rainwater harvesting, small-scale bioenergy generation and the use of wood in a wide variety of residential home construction formats. The lobby to FPL’s historic “Building One” will also be open for an exhibit of historical artifacts related to forest products research dating back to the early 20th century. Experts will be on hand to provide free wood identification services to visitors, as well.
Kids activities will also be available. Demonstrations will include termites, paper-making and a “magic show” featuring amazing wood species, among others. The event will also feature a visit from our friends Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl.
