The University of Wisconsin-Madison Police Department in conjunction with University of Wisconsin-Madison Police Department First Responders (UWPDFR), National Weather Service (NWS) and Student Emergency Medical Service (SEMS) group will provide a two part session on preparedness.
Are you ready? This first session will provide a step by step approach on how to get informed about local emergency plans, how to identify hazards that affect your local area, and how to develop and maintain an emergency communications plan and disaster supply kit. Other topics that will be covered will include evacuation, family preparedness, animals in disaster, and info specific to people with disabilities.
You will have a choice for your second session, depending on the date you choose. The National Weather Service (NWS) severe weather spotter class covers the basics of thunderstorm structure so that attendees will be able to identify cloud features that foretell the development or approach of tornadoes/funnel clouds or thunderstorm down-burst, straight-line winds, hail, and heavy rains. Additionally, the topics of false tornadoes and false funnel clouds are examined, as well as the roles of the NWS and spotters in the warning process. A few safety tips are also explained. This class will be offered on September 7th and September 21st.
This American Heart Association (AHA) CPR/AED class provides you the understanding on how to administer CPR for adults and children. You’ll learn how to handle emergency situations, take basic precautions to prevent disease transmission, help someone in breathing and cardiac emergencies, administer chest compressions and use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). All participants receive an American Heart Association (AHA) Adult CPR certification card and participant’s manual. This class will be offered on September 14th and September 28th.
Pizza will be provided. Classes will be located at the Waisman Center, 1500 Highland Ave
